Leon’s Artist statement 400-650 Words…

Deadline November 27th

The process I use to create my work is through simplicity and takes a gradual approach that takes steady steps.

Usually I would have about 2 or 3 versions for every specific piece of work I produce through photo.

During the course of this year i have gradually produced engravings done on metal including copper, nickel silver, Brass and Gilding sheets and have used the medium of printmaking to represent the theme of my work being Urban decay and human dereliction through car crashes.

Below are a couple of images showing how my process has worked throughout this year.

The First three images are the Lino rubbings and carvings.

The reason why i though of using the mustang car specifically during my work practice is because of how the car is from the 1950’s allowing for starting conversation around the idea of sexism from the 1950’s racism in western culture and the world over from back then along with the inequality gap.

I feel that the idea of using car from the 1950’s and 60’s is a simple and effective way to open conversations for more complexed social issues so this is the mane reason as to why i have gone with cars to show the theme of Urbanised decay and dereliction.

For this next stage in my artist statement this will cover my metal engraving process through a quick five images for documentation of my specific practice on metal.

I have found that using metal has given me more options for my process when going through the idea of engraving no metal along with the metal itself relating back to the specific car as a material and through this idea I thought of overlaing metals onto each other to represent the car in more of a story narrative through words and processes.

Example one.

Example two.

Example three.

The reason why i have decided to overlap the metals is to show how the idea of the car from the 1950’s and the Ford capri 1964 both being from the 50’s and 60’s have a shared connection to the growing social issues shown through out those time periods with the last image above being used to visually represent how the topic of car crashes can show something that is man-made used to help people travel independantly also trappes people if not driven with care or consideration for others in a cycle of positive freedom vs hazardous risks to the driver and public.

What materials have I used and why have I used them ?

During my practice I have used a butane torch for burn marks for the extra metals I have attached to the plates through metal glue and screwing, by using the element of fire and a hammer for my process, this technique for my process I feel has referenced back to the idea of crashes through using destruction as an art form for creating my work and amplafiying the theme I have chosen.

Some artists I have been influnced by while going through my process was Andy Warhol’s Silver car crash (Double disaster) and green car crash screen prints along with J.G ballards book crash and Death and desire in car crash culture by Ricarda Vidal.

Are there any outside influences that have a baring or ralation to your work ? ..

There are connections separate to everything else stated previously that relates through outside connections to my work such as the London riots from 2011 following the police shooting of Mark Duggan, The west end riots 1886, The 1887 bloody Sunday a demonstration against corrosion in Ireland, The 1907 Brown dog riots, The 2009 Upton park riots and the Rioting outside forest gate police station following the death of Edson Da Costa in 2017.

What ties your pics of indavidual work into a practice? ..

The way I have created my work is through mixed media with most of my practice done through engraving onto surfaces and altering textures through dangrious resources allowing for what ties my individual work work as a solid practice to be engraving at its foundations for what my work has gradually become.

I feel that my art speaks and refers to the dark side of human nature that makes people feel uncomfortable but also intrigues the audience or people seeing my work, since a lot of the time life altering negative circumstances can create feelings of curiosity and the wonting to understand why things happened, similar to how in a crime scene or investagation the public like to know what the reason was around the curcumsance and what was the core reason for the situation that played out something that I can see in my own pracitce represented through visually telling a story were it’s the viewers job to pice togther the puzzle.
